Full-time Tax Controversy Counsel - Law Firm

Tax Controversy Counsel The candidate will be engaged in all aspects of federal tax controversy work with primary focus on the resolution of issues before the Appeals Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS Appeals). Will resolve issues before IRS Appeals in the corporate income (domestic and international), partnership and excise tax areas. Prepare protests (including supplemental) in response to both 30 and 60-Day letters from the IRS Examination Division and to address claims originating in a particular IRS Appeals cycle. Represent company before IRS Appeals, including the Appeals Team Case Leader, in a professional and effective manner. Recommend, coordinate, and defend settlement positions in a convincing manner before IRS Appeals. Recommend settlement proposals to company management and coordinating issue resolution with members of the company Tax Department and relevant business segment personnel. Draft Letters of Understanding and Closing Agreements summarizing settlement terms and the increase (decrease) to taxable income or tax credits arising from the settlement. Support third party experts or outside counsel involved in the resolution of issues before IRS Appeals. Work with the Appeals Team Case Leader to develop an Issue Status Schedule that incorporates all settlement amounts in the Appeals cycle. Work with company Tax Audit Specialists to develop the tax computations for an IRS Appeals cycle. Work closely with the company Tax Audit Specialists to develop issues currently before the IRS Examination Division, including the drafting of responses to IRS Information Document Requests. Work with appropriate outside experts in the resolution of interest computation matters relating to IRS Appeals cycles.

High School degree or equivalent; college or business school desirable. Should have 4+ years of litigation secretary experience, preferably defense litigation. Working knowledge of processing pleadings/discovery in MO, IL and Federal Courts and electronic court filing experience required. Should have strong computer skills - Microsoft Word. Should have strong verbal and written communication skills: correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Accurate/timely dictation Skills are required. Typing speed of 65 wpm required.
